‘Former Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl have said they are “dismayed and very disappointed” at how Kurt Cobain is used in a video game.
They do not agree that the band’s late frontman can be used to play songs by other artists in the new Guitar Hero.
In a joint statement, they said they “didn’t know” Cobain’s character in the game could be used to play any kind of song the player wants.
Game makers Activision said permission had been granted by Cobain’s estate.’ – Read the rest here
A few days ago I stuck up for ‘Rock Star’ saying that it’s influence on young kids getting into music was a good thing.
But ‘Guitar Heroes’ idea of having Kurt Cobain as an unlockable character seems to be far beyond the pale.
I’m not at all offay with the ins and outs of the game to be honest but can you do the same with Hendrix? Is he even in the game.
Anyway moot point really because apparently the Nirvana estate signed off on it.
Not as bad as selling his diaries but a bit off all the same.
And really can’t blame Activision for asking if they could do it, (although common decency should have informed them not too).
Leaves a bad taste in the mouth really.
Maybe I’m just being over sensitive to it. Kurt Cobain was someone I admired and had a lot of respect for even if I disagreed with some aspects of his life.
Maybe I should lighten up after all it’s just a game…
